Self-Directed Services in Maryland

At Mahmyl Supports, we believe families deserve clarity, confidence, and choice. Here are answers to common questions about Maryland’s self-directed service model—designed to help you make informed decisions and feel supported every step of the way.

Who can self-direct services?

Anyone approved for DDA waiver services can Self-Direct their plan. Currently all services operate un one program, Community Pathways.

How are staff and vendors paid?

Payments are handled by a Fiscal Management and Counseling Services (FMCS) provider—like Fello, GT Independence, or PPL. They manage payroll, taxes, and vendor payments using your approved Medicaid waiver budget.

Is there a spending limit?

Yes. Your Person-Centered Plan (PCP) outlines your approved budget. Your FMCS provider helps track expenses and ensure compliance.

What does “self-directed” mean?

Self-direction puts you in charge. You choose your staff, set schedules, manage your budget, and shape services around your goals and values.

Can I hire family members?

Yes. Family members and legally responsible adults can be hired, but additional oversight may be required. Mahmyl Supports can help you navigate this process with care and compliance.

What if I need help managing my plan?

You’re not alone. Mahmyl Supports collaborates with Support Brokers, Coordinators of Community Services (CCSs), and FMCS providers to guide you through every step.

Do I need a Support Broker?

Support Brokers are required if a paid staff person is a relative, legal guardian, or representative payee. Otherwise, they’re optional—but many families choose to work with one for planning, hiring, and oversight.
